My husband and I took our Crew to Chili's for dinner the other night. Why? I have no idea. I guess because we thought that it would be fun. Sadly, it really was not that fun and I should have known better. First of all, there was an issue with the wait and then it was with the food.
Understand that my younger kids can only handle waiting for about 20 minutes before they lose control and when we found out that the wait would be about 40 minutes...well...
"FORTY MINUTES!" I yelled in my head. "Crap!"
So we waited.
And waited.
And waited.
After what seemed like forever I decided to check with the hostess to see where we were on the wait list. "Two more ahead of you," she said. With waning hope I wondered, "How long that will be?"
A few minutes later, we were approached by an ESL (English as a Second Language) host who explained that we could be seated right away if we wanted two separate tables. Or we could wait a little longer for a bigger table.
"Two separate tables? Really? I've got kids! That would never work," were my thoughts. I then asked, "When you say it is going to be a little longer what exactly do you mean because we have already been waiting for a really long time."
The ESL host agreed and said, "Yes, it be little longer." He didn't understand my question. *sigh*
Finally, we were seated after waiting for over an hour, and naturally ordered chips and salsa because the kids were starving! I know awesome, right? While we were munching, I couldn't help but notice that a couple of kids in the booth right by us looked like some boys, Jermaine and Jerome, I knew as a missionary in East St. Louis. I tried not to stare too much but the resemblance was uncanny and obviously I knew that it could not have been them because it has been over 12 years since I have seen them. They are all grown up now and in their mid-twenties. So ya, it was crazy.
Back to Chili's. The food was big time mediocre. I ordered a steak and it was less than I expected, but I really shouldn't be disappointed, right? I mean Chili's is just middle class dining at its finest. Nothing to brag about and if I had to rate our overall experience on a scale from 1-10 it was definitely a 3. No more like a 1 1/2 - 2 and it will be a very long time before we go back. But if you do decide to go, stick with the bacon burger. You can't go wrong with that. Especially with a few slices of avocado on top.
Our second-rate dining experience lasted a mere three hours. The initial wait was too long, the food was lame, but I was reminded of two great kids from my past. So despite any issues we may have encountered I was able to take a walk down memory lane.

For those very same reasons, we have decided that our kids no longer go to those "nicer" restaurants with us. Besides, their food usually ends up costing nearly as much as our food, and they rarely eat it! Anyway, I have learned that if steak is not served at Texas Roadhouse, it is mediocre! ;)
